Review
I went into this book without reading the synopsis and it was a terrible decision. To be fair my book club was reading it. I really need to stop reading Ali Hazelwood's books because they are really not my cup of tea. First off, all of her characters are the same. The FMC is always petite with teeny tiny hands and is always smarter than everyone else. The MMC is always taller than a basketball player and is a creepy stalker who is obsessed with the FMC. Another thing I've noticed with her books is that it lacks character diversity. All the characters are always white, even the side characters. Which adds to all her books feeling like same thing over and over. The spice wasn't even spicy it was so vanilla. All they did was talk about kink but never actually did anything kinky. Like hello?? That's the whole selling point of this book.
The premise of this book could've been executed much better than it actually was. I really hated the fact that Scarlett thought that it was a good idea to sleep with her friend's ex. Hazelwood tried to set up plot so that what Scarlett and Luka were doing wouldn't be seen as wrong. For example, she kept emphasizing the fact that Scarlett wasn't really friends with Pen, they're "just" teammates. This felt like a way to make Scarlett not look like a bad person because she and Pen were not technically friends. Pen telling Scarlett and Luka to sleep together felt like a cheap way to show that what they end up doing wasn't wrong or weird. The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way. The MCs also lack chemistry in Hazelwood's books (except Love Theoretically). It's always insta-lust, please stop marketing your books as romance when there isn't any. Them going at it like rabbits is not romance!
Scarlett was the typical Ali Hazelwood FMC. Bland, boring, daddy issues, smarter than scientists with years of experience and education and super tiny. You're telling me she had eight years of therapy and she made zero progress? Why even bother going if it hasn't helped you? I found it really hard to believe that she was actually smarter than scientists with years of education and work experience. She's only 21and it wasn't mentioned that she had an above average IQ, but in the Ali Hazelwood universe the FMC is always just smarter than everyone for reason. Her inner monologues were so boring! She kind of acts like the other girls on the team don't like her even though she never tries to be friends with them. Scarlett was just a pick-me.
Luka is just a knock-off Bill Skarsgard. I really didn't care for him at all, he was truly a POS and a stalker weirdo.
Overall, it was a terrible book with an unbelievable plot and bland, boring characters with no personality. I would not recommend wasting your time on this. It's way too long to waste your time on.

Luka was having inappropriate dreams about Scarlett while he was dating Penelope and then continued his relationship with her for another TWO YEARS!!!!!!! HE'S A POS AND I ABSOLUTELY DESPISE HIM!!!
