Review
I don't know why I keep doing this to myself. Why do I keep reading Ali Hazelwood's new publications? I genuinely think her fans don't know how to critically analyze books because why are all her books so hyped? The only ones I think deserve the hype they got were The Love Hypothesis and Love Theoretically. I've read all her books and I can confidently say that they all read the same except for TLH and LT.
Rue and Eli were basically just Bee and Levi. Rue is a pick me just like Bee and Eli is a simp just like Levi. They had no chemistry. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Nothing. It started off with just Eli lusting after Rue, but then it eventually becomes mutual. and it didn't make it any better. All of Eli's thoughts about Rue are about her body, she literally an engineer and all he cares about are her b***s and wanting to have s** with her. There was one scene where they were having a heart-to-heart conversation and opening up their childhoods and I kid you not, all Eli was thinking about was how hot she looked. Huh?? This girl is literally opening up to you and all you can think about is how h**** she makes you?? Can you imagine opening up to someone about your childhood trauma and them just not even listening to what your saying and getting h**** from it? I could not believe what I was reading.
After reading this book, I understand why Hazelwood doesn't write dual POV because Eli's chapters were so bad. All of his cheaters were just him being h**** and lusting after Rue. He had no deep thoughts about anything, he didn't feel like a fully fledged out character considering he's the MMC. Literally all his chapters were about Rue, I wanted to have more thoughts from him about his relationship with his sister and his parents. His whole life apparently revolves around Rue.
Communication is not possible for Rue even though she's an engineer. This woman is in her late twenties/ early thirties and cannot communicate her thoughts and feelings to save her life. Whenever something serious happens, she just shuts down and runs away, I'm sorry but at her big age she should've worked that out a long time ago. I really hated how Hazelwood tried to make Rue seem like she had street smarts and common sense by not giving out her real name when meeting up with men to hook up, but if she cared so much about her safety, would she really met up with random men? She kept saying that Eli could be a serial killer when they met, but if she was genuinely concerned for her safety, she wouldn't meet up with random people. Also, she seems to lack that common sense in other scenarios. Her whole "I don't date, because I'm too weird and no one would want to date me, so I only hook up" thought process was giving major pick-me energy. She literally even says that she's not weird like her best friend, she's "good weird", Rue is "bad" weird... whatever that means.
Overall, I did not enjoy this book because it was essentially Love on the Brain2.0 and I personally did not like Love on the Brain either, so take that into consideration. I think if you did like LOTB, then you'll like Not in Love.
