Review
Where do I start? The extreme slow burn romance? The lack of chemistry? The instalove? This was the first book that I read by Sarah Adams and I felt very let down because I heard really great things about her books. I decided to pick up When in Rome because it was overhyped in the book community and everyone was giving it rave reviews. To say that I was disappointed is an understatement. The book was slow paced and very drawn out. Like there were a lot of random details that could've been edited out during the editing stage. Noah and Amelia had too many inner monologues and it did make the book quite boring to be honest. The supposed tension between Noah and Amelia was not one that had me feeling butterflies. Also the townsfolk were extremely nosy and annoying, which ruined the small town vibes for me. Why would I want to live in a town where everyone is always in my business and interrogating me about my personal life? I literally almost DNF this book so many times. There weren't many cute/ romantic scenes in the whole three hundred twenty pages! The banter didn't make me giggle or anything, which sucked because I just finished reading The Bodyguard by Katherine Center (full review is posted) and absolutely loved that book. It was a five star read for me. I'm not sure how Noah and Amelia fell in love in within a few days if meeting, especially when Noah didn't want to be near her with a ten foot pole.
Noah was too grumpy for my taste, sometimes he was just rude to Amelia and I didn't like it. I really didn't think of him as grumpy, to me he came off as more hostile. He doesn't like her because she's an outsider like this ex, which was dumb to be honest. The whole thing with his ex was kind of his fault in my opinion. It felt like he was projecting his past mistakes onto Amelia, which again added to his dislikability. It also seemed that Noah didn't like Amelia because of some preconceived notions he had about celebrities, which made him more of a jerk. Also how many times can Adams describe Noah as " tall, blonde, with green eyes?" Like we get it! Noah is probably one of least favourite MMCs from a romance novel. I really didn't find anything likeable about him. Also, his sisters were so obnoxious, they kept on meddling in his business even though he's a grown thirty-two year old man, who is more than capable of making his own decisions.
Amelia was just another stereotypical romance novel FMC. She had daddy issues, which is a common theme in most romance novels and I really don't understand why the FMCs can't have a loving supportive dad who is in their life and still married to their mom. Almost all the romance books I've read have this trope where the FMC comes from a single mom household and has major daddy issues. Amelia just felt like a lot of other romance FMCs and she was just boring. Her quirk is being obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. She was one of my least favourite FMC from a romance novel. Both MCs were bland and boring. There was no real character development.
Overall, I was disappointed by When in Rome and felt that the book was quite forgettable. I thought the concept was interesting and could've been a five star read for me if it had been executed differently. I don't think I will not be reading the second book in the series because quite frankly, I don't care about Noah's sister. I recommend this book only if you really like Sarah Adams.
