Review
I was intrigued by A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid when I first saw it in a "Most anticipated Fall 2023 releases video." I was sold when I heard it was academic rivals to lovers, it's one of my favourite tropes in books. I immediately added it to my Goodreads and my cart and patiently waited for the release date. I was not disappointed one bit! The setting was very interesting because it takes place in a fantasy world, but they have a lot of the technology that we have. It kind of gave me a sort of 1920's vibe and I really enjoyed it. I ate up the banter between Preston and Effy, I love good banter between the love interests in a book.
Effy was an interesting main character. She's definely been through a lot in life and has a quite sad childhood and things don't really look up for her when she enters university. Being the only female student in the Architeture department, she is kind of shunned and not taken seriously by her peers. She is also shunned from the rest of university for other reasons. I fel that Effy didn't really have much of a personality to be honest. Her only personality trait is that she loves literature, Emrys Myriddin, and Angaharad.
Preston by himself as a character was a little bland, not gonna lie. The readers don't really learn much about him outside of some stuff about his parents, but we don't learn much about him as a person. Throughout the book, he's very guarded and never really says much about himself or shows much of his personality. I think that alone he was boring as a character, same with Effy, however, I think that they're better together.
Overall, I really enjoyed A Study in Drowning. It was very whimsical and fun, you really get immersed in the story. I do recommend reading A Study in Drowning by Ava Reid!
