Review
I was looking forward to reading Hello Stranger after reading The Bodyguard and absolutely loving it. However, this book fell short in a lot of ways. It was slow paced and boring. I was so close to DNFing it a few times while reading, but I pushed through and finished it and it does not get more entertaining.
Sadie was one of the most annoying FMCs I've ever read. She has way too much pride and refuses to accept help from anyone, even when she's in desperate need of it. It didn't make her a girl boss, it just made her whiny and irritating. It's one thing to be prideful, but it's a whole different story to be stubborn and annoying. Sadie just came across as an annoying bratty teenager, which is crazy because she's supposed to be twenty eight. She is always somehow the victim in every situation and that got frustrating very fast.
Why was her family written to be cartoonishly evil? It was giving A Cinderella Story and it felt like the stepmom was supposed to be like Jennifer Coolidge's character. Her stepsister's insults were so juvenile, no adult says stuff like that. I really would've thought she was like 12 years old, if her age wasn't mentioned. To be honest, I felt like everyone in this book was very childish, not just Sadie and her stepsister.
What I'm about to say is not just about Hello Stranger , but about all romance books. I'm tired of daddy issues being thrown into every single romance book. I haven't read a single romance book where the FMC has a loving, caring, and supportive dad who hasn't abandoned her or cheated on her mom. Also, I'm tired of the FMC's parents always being divorced, like can they never just come from a loving home with happily married parents? Another thing that irks me is when the mom dies and the dad is just mean to the FMC for no reason and treats her like garbage. These tropes are old.
Overall, this book was disappointing and all the characters were extremely annoying. If you want to read a Katherine Center book, read The Bodyguard, it's a fun and fast paced book!
